History

Montenegro is country of rich and long tradition, and first known residents, were Iliri. In time of Romans, its residents were from tribes of Docleata, and in 7th century, Slavs have arrived and destroyed former Byzantium province Prevalitana. In 11th century, it gets name Duklja, and further on Zeta.

Duklja – Zeta, and in 15th Century Montenegro, are synonyms for tradition of one country whose first important person have lived in Duklja, and it was duke Vladimir, who was enslaved by emperor Samuilo, who himself was enslaved in 1018, when Zeta drops under Byzantium empire.

Zeta has become kingdom in 1077, and in time of Bodin, neighboring Raska and Bosnia have been united to it.
Balsici family were those who strengthen and widened it, and in mid of 15th century, under authority of Crnojevic dynasty, in every source, we find it as Crna Gora (Montenegro).
Ivan Crnojevic founded first capital, where he constructed monastery and palace. It has never been totally conquered by Turkey, although they constantly tried, and it was the only one totally non-conquered part of this part of Balkans.

Residues of Ottoman culture and governance are still, even today, visible. First printing firm was founded in 1493, when the first book “Oktoih” was printed. Soon after, dynasty Petrovic is taking over the governance.
Dynasty Petrovic has united Montenegrin tribes, and Petar I Petrovic is establishing the state. Petar II is crating the machinery of government and he is forming Senate, Court, and Elite Guard, his successor Danilo, divides secular and religious authorities, strengthening institutions of state, passing Legal Code of Montenegro and mountains (“Zakonik crnogorski I brdski”), and making confines with Turkey. Nikola Petrovic continues with wars and victories over Turkey, and in congress of Berlin in 1878, Montenegro becomes independent state with twice bigger territory than before. In 1905, Montenegro is getting first Constitution, and in 1910 it becomes kingdom.

After he took victory over Austrian military in 1916, in Mojkovac, and he got no support of allies, King Nikola has withdrawn in France. In 1918, Montenegro has been joined to Serbia, by decision of Assembly of Podgorica, and it entered to make part of Kingdom Of Serbs, Croatian and Slovenians, and in 1929, Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

In First World War, Montenegro was on a side of allies, and by creation of Socialistic Federative Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ), it became one of six Federal Republics.
In disintegration of this state in 1992, Montenegro continued to live in community with Serbia until May 21th, 2006, when o referendum gained independence.
