Durmitor
Area of Durmitor is located on northwest of Montenegro, and it takes hold of 1.852km². It is only 70-airline km far from seashore. Massif of Durmitor stands out the mountain-hill area that is encircled with other mountain massifs, as Sinjajevina, Maglić, Golija, etc., and deep river canyons intersect the entire region. The best confirmation is the fact that lowest height above sea level in Tara canyon is 433m, spacious lands are at 1.500m, and the highest pint of Durmitor is at 2.522m high.
National park of Durmitor is made of 39.000 hectare of area, and encompasses primary Durmitor’s massif, canyons of Tara, Sušica, and Draga, as upper part of canyon’s valley Komarnica. Glacier lakes give special beauty to the area, commonly known as “Mountain eyes.” The most beautiful among them are Black lake (Crno jezero), Zminje (Zminje jezero), Great Lake (Veliko jezero), and Small Lake of Škrč. (Malo Škrčko jezero).
Tara Canyon
Tara canyon is 68 km long, and its depth goes to 1300m. Regarding depth, longitude, and other characteristics, it considered being second Canyon in World, after Colorado Canyon in USA. Rich flora has been kept from geological past, with more that 1500 species, animal world is also very diverse, especially 130 kinds of birds, among which eagles stands out.
Komarnica canyon
Komarnica River flows trough valley of Dragušnica that is rich of various floras, but because of karst ground, it is periodically loosing and appearing. In its lower part, the River flows trough 4,5 km long canyon that is very deeply engraved in stones, with waterfalls over 100m, and with narrower slopes, which, in some places, are only 2-3 meters far from each other. Canyon’s configuration is such that somewhere from its edges, it is not possible to see river’s further course, so it got name “Nevidio”(“Invisible”).
Because of its inaccessibility “Nevidio “ canyon was conquered not until 1956.
Lovćen mountain
National park Lovćen is located on southwest of Montenegro. It encircles central and the biggest part of Lovćen, one of the symbols of Montenegro. Area of the park is 6400 hectares. In central part, dominating once are Štirovnik and Jezerski vrh (Lake peak), and especially impressive summer pasture stone – “kameno more”(Stone sea). The most famous Montenegrin poet and bishoup Petar II Petrović Njegoš was berried on Jezerski vrh (Lake peak). Juncture of Mediterranean and continental climate has created unique flora and fauna with more that 1300 various plants and 200 kinds of birds and different reptile.
Forest of Biograd
This is last jungle in Europe.
National park Forest of Biograd is placed in central part of Montenegro, between river basin of Tara and Lim, and it is spread on 5400 hectares. Peaks of mountain are high more that 2000 meters with glacier lakes, which gives unique beauty to this area. Bjelasica is considered to be one of the most rich mountains of Europe, because its flora and hydrographic potential. Jungle Forest of Biograd is spread on 1600 hectares. In the middle of jungle, there is Lake of Biograd, biggest and most famous in variety of glacier lakes on Bjelasica.
Lake of Skadar( Skadarsko jezero)
The biggest lake on Balkan and biggest birds preserve in Europe is Skadar Lake.
It is placed at the utmost southeast of Montenegro, in the valley on 6meters of absolute height. The lake is kriptodepresija , because biggest part of its bottom is under sea level. 2/3 of Lake belongs to Montenegro, and 1/3 to Albania. Depending on water level, Lake’s surface is 370-540km². Riverbanks are jagged with numerous bays, peninsulas and capes
Boka Kotorska
Bay of Boka Kotorska is known as bride of Adriatic Sea. This is unique natural fjord of Mediterranean. Town Kotor is its seat, with 2-½ millennium long history. Traces of Ilir’s and Roman culture, Romanic, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, are still kept in Kotor. Old town of Kotor is among Mediterranean towns with best-protected medieval urban environment from 12th – 14th century, and it is included in list of World’s Culture property, under UNESCO protection. The oldest settlement in Boka is Risan. In 3rd century before Christ it was established as Ilir’s town and capital of Queen Teuta.
